Iris Hantwerk, Sweden
In the late 19th century, a small brush binding factory was established in Stockholm. It developed out of a movement to create work for visually impaired artisans enabling them to live independently from their craft. A collective was formed to purchase natural fibers and materials for local brush binders and soon a factory and shop was established to sell their quality brushes, keeping the art of hand brush binding alive.
Now, as then, every brush is made by hand by visually impaired craftsmen. All brushes are of exclusive design and made mostly from natural materials. Iris Hantverk continues to supply individual artisans across the country with raw materials.
Recently the Iris Hantverk Design team has reached out to expand thier line to include other natural handcrafted items, like this organic knit face cloth, which is now part of this inspring tradition.
